Intelligent Buses?

How do you feel about a bus that operates intelligently without a driver?

Super cool? Yes.
Next generation? Yes.
Safe? Maybe. Depends on the traveling distance and changing circumstances.
Comforting? No. I worry about who is on the bus without at least the driver to give me that instant feeling of security.

Is it a better idea than the fuel cell bus?

For now? No. Fuel cells need to be developed now more than driver-less buses.
In the future? Maybe. Perhaps when we are advanced enough to uniformly move to fuel-cells we can have learn to use intelligent transportation. Although intelligent systems are creeping into our lives everyday, we may not be prepared to allow them to take over simple tasks such as driving.

Post a comment. I'd love to know what you think.

Super cool? Definitely. It'd be just like in the sci-fi movies.
Next generation? yes again.
Safe? Not too sure how safe. Unfortunately we still live in a society where there are tons of people who would take advantage of an unmanned MOT for criminal purposes.
Comforting? No. Like you, I would worry about who is on the bus and would definitely feel more comfortable if there was at least someone from DOT on there to give the appearance of safety at least.

For now? I believe fuel cell buses should be more of a priority than driverless buses because it makes more sense to focus on things like air polution and emmisions rather than just upgrading technology w/o advantages to the environment.
In the future? If they came up with an unmanned bus that was safe, cost effective, and better for the environment I could see it being a good idea for the future.
But honestly, what exactly is the advantage of an unmanned bus? The more I think about it, the fewer advantages I can find.

Hijacked your blog...Sorry!

I believe that a MOT or other unmanned system is only a beneficial tool if we have people who can provide the social piece to fill in where the tech piece leaves off. It's not so much an effort to make people jobless, as is it to give others an opportunity to increase the enjoyment of mass transit, etc.
So, no driver - safer, cleaner rides.
That's the goal. There will always be gaps to fill when technology is inserted. I believe it must be the human component to fill it.

Nuclear Power - That's really interesting, Rob. A scientist named Freeman Dyson (and others) spent the better part of the 70s trying to convince a frightened world about the safety of nuclear power.
As we know, nuclear 'accidents' overshadowed many hard years of work to bring safer, smaller and more efficient energy sources into the world.
One of his many goals was to help bring very small nuclear energy to fruition. So, massive power grids would no longer be necessary. Helping to reduce the "idiot driver runs into a telephone pole killing power for millions" scenario. Interesting notion, but people are so small minded, all they think of is mass nuclear explosions like in old 'B' movies.
